SICKLE BUSH

Dichrostachys (2 x coloured) cinerea / Sekelbos

This small tree is rather Acacia-like in appearance, round and untidy with bi-pinnate leaves and short spines. It is particularly common in wooded grassland and often takes over as a 'secondary bush' on impoverished soils, where it tends to form impenetrable thickets. As such it's presence is often taken as an indication that the veld has been overgrazed.   The pink section is made up of sterile flowers and the yellow section consists of fertile bisexual flowers.  The fruit pods are twisted and intertwined being of sickle-shape (hence the name) and fall as a cluster.

Game eat them with relish as they are highly nutritious.

The roots and leaves have been used to treat snake-bite, scorpion stings, sore-eyes and toothache!

The above contribution and photo received by the "Hansons".
