Another view of the wood fuel test ready to start.
Wood fire test in progress, note that there is a little smoke, not much, but it could be a factor on your choice of fuel, depending  on conditions and location of camp.

Also, because of the situation with not enough air for the fire, more smoke was present. After cutting the can shorter, more air  is available for the fire and less smoke was produced.
I had to run the wood fire test with the pot slightly off to the side in order to be able to feed the fire, also to get enough air to the  fire.

After the test, I trimmed 1/2" off the can and punched another row of holes for more air.

Now I won't have to run the thing off center. Also, to keep a hot fire, continuous feed is necessary. After cooking temperature is  reached, larger would may be used to maintain a more moderate temperature and require less feeding.
It works! This about a 10 minute burn and a rolling boil. I figure the original wood supply would last about 20 more minutes,  most of the larger wood is remaining.

The wood ranged in size from pencil lead to about 3/8" diameter. It has been raining here and I just went out into the woods and  grabbed some squaw wood, no special preparations.
