"They Used to Tie You Up" - Dave as Roger / Beat Warcraft ... Now to Warcraft II / Early Holiday Musings

"I didn't recognize you without your handcuffs."

- Roger (from "Rent")

I had been on my second big "Rent" kick since sometime last year, when I first saw the movie version. The original cast recording fueled and invigorated my love of this musical. If I were ever to try out for a part, I'd definitely see myself as Roger. The passion and hopefulness in "One Song Glory" and the independence expressed in "Another Day" are just awesome. The story being played out in "Light my Candle". I think his songs are within my vocal range, too.

Pam and I fully intend to see a production of this, even if we have to go to Broadway and see it there. On occasion, I fully enjoy something that occurred before I was born, but this is something that actually started during my lifetime that I could have seen then. If it doesn't come to the Mondavi Center or somewhere equally appropriate, to New York we'll go.

I beat Warcraft. No, not "World of Warcraft". Not "Warcraft III". I'm talking about "Warcraft: Orcs and Humans", the game that started it all. I've had the CD version of Warcraft for many years. I initially had it in a 3.5" version that I bought from some now-gone computer shop, but I traded that one in for SimTower (the original 3.5" version wouldn't let me save my game; kind of worthless at that point). I bought the CD version sometime later but never could beat it. So, recently, I took a stab and tried my hand at it.

The original Warcraft didn't feel all too different this time around, but it felt a lot easier. I realized before playing again that I didn't get enough gold/lumber and couldn't produce troops fast enough. At other times, I needed to produce smarter, not larger. Through some determination, I managed to beat Warcraft with both the Humans and Orcs.

Warcraft II, however, trips me up a bit. I think the sheer amount of things I could do compared to what I should do makes it difficult for me. The sea warfare also has me a little frustrated on one particular level. I'm resisting the urge to look for walk-throughs and am trying to figure it out myself. Frankly, that's been the usual path when I get frustrated. We'll see how I progress with this one.

Overall, I'm rather happy with myself. I managed to beat one game that eluded me for about 13 years and made progress on another.

A week before Halloween, I see the first quarts of eggnog on sale. Michael's has a clearance on Halloween decorations and already has Christmas stuff out. For some reason, it always feels like stores change out their holiday inventories earlier each year. And the AL sweeps the NL in the World Series later each year.

Pam and I bounded up to Apple Hill for our annual trip. Neither of us spent much. I got my pumpkin up there and bought a rather nice bottle stopper there. Some people carve wood and make various things with it. One of the things they make is a wooden-topped bottle stopper. Mine is a light brown with dark brown rings on a few of the edges. The stopper unscrews to reveal a corkscrew. Pam bought a couple of teacup/saucer Christmas tree ornaments. We didn't buy any apples, pies, or anything like that. When we go to cut Christmas trees in early December, we'll probably bring the ice chest and get a pie or two.

Meanwhile, I sit at home, having finished my first glass of eggnog. I used to love Crystal's eggnog, but the carton I bought last year didn't taste quite as good for some reason. I may have to try my hand and make my own. My giant bottle of E & J VSOP brandy remains unopened, but I may crack that one open for a future glass.
