Banditos (plus any Contrabandistas and Dope Lords who may be out there):
Many grins from perusing the archives (John sent). You all are out of
your collective minds, which is good. Re: John's queries:
Movie-wise, CB has had some action over the years. The closest it
probably came to getting made was via John Cusack, the actor, who
contacted me in '92 about adapting it. Nothing ultimately came of our
conversations, but his enthusiasm was akin to yours -- in other words,
he's nuts too. If he knew about this group, he'd probably join. Some
maniac film producer from Australia also claimed he wanted to make the
thing, but but when I had the nerve to ask for money, he got weird. The
usual. Frankly, folks, I don't think the book would translate well to
film. It's too dependant on its narrative voice for its humor -- and
that voice doesn't come across on the screen. But on the other hand, for
a six figure production bonus, I'll see what I can do.
It's true that I
made the cover of the Sept. issue of Men's Journal -- myself and my dog
Shiner in Costa Rica -- I also took the picture. The two of us are also
on the May issue back page -- in Baja, Mexico. And I did an article in
the February '99 issue on traveling in the Caribbean. Mostly I've been
making a buck at screen and TV -- Miami Vice and Crime Story back in the
80s, along with feature rewrites and an original I wrote called BEER --
it got so fucked up by the director that I tried to disown it -- a total
nightmare. But a lot of money. A mag called the Surfer's Journal has
published a lot of my stuff over the years -- surfing is a serious thing
with me.
My new book, In Search of Captain Zero is nonfiction -- it
deals with the two years I spent recently in Mexico and Central America
looking for an old friend who disappeared down there. The book turned
into a memoir as well -- my days as a pot smuggler (surprise) and
screenwriter and surfer. If you can wait for its publication, you'll get
the whole story of Yours fucking A Truly.
Okay, enough for now.
If any of you all have any other comments (I loved some of the stuff in
the Bandito archives) or questions, I'm here.
