Well, if you know me then you'll know that it wouldn't be long before I would have at least one page dedicated to the Monkees, and here it is!!!!,and if you don't like it well tough!!!!, It's my site and what I say goes!!!!!!
Common belief is that the Monkees were created as an American version of the Beatles, whereas I believe only part of this is true! the Monkees were created as an American version of A Hard Day's Night which was a one off film featuring the Beatles, the sale of Monkees recordings were only a by product of the show as were other various pieces of merchandise not only like the array of Beatles impractical merchandise that flooded the market.
But it was the way that they were created that was so controversial, which by today's standards was pretty tame!!!!, auditions were held where hapless youths were screen-tested and in most cases treated pretty shabbily to see how they would react, in some cases simply ignored!!!!!!. On this and looks they were chosen!!!! not unlike today!!!!.

Mike-I'm always the last to know about costume changes!!!!

But four pulled through and were rocketed to stardom virtually overnight as a safe band for young teenagers too young for the now bearded drug taking Beatles, now parents could look at four clean cut lads with long hair and think not all kids are bad with long hair and modern clothes, thus making the "alternative look" mainstream. So the four chosen were country musician Michael Nesmith from Texas, folk musician Peter Tork from Washington, actor and musical singer (I don't mean musical as in, in tune, I mean as in stage musical) from Manchester England and actor Micky Dolenz from California. Such different backgrounds gave most fans someone to relate to but ultimately led to the break-up in the band as they had nothing in common with each other, they argued constantly and later in their career publicly.

call me talent less would you Nesmith!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So after the picking and choosing was done and the four were selected, the recording of the series soon begun once they got to know each other (and dislike each other). 58 episodes in total were filmed, 32 in the first series and 26 in the second series, the first series was more structured than the second series and revolved more about them being a band than the second, but both were based around the most impossible plots, such as the band being kidnapped by gypsies, spending the night in a haunted house, getting accidentally involved with gangsters and so on.
But how many times can you get kidnapped for different reasons and how many times can you rescue a troubled girl who is madly in love with Davy? the band knew this and by the second series had gained more control of the series, I have always thought this was the biggest mistake, as they used the half an hour to make fun of themselves and the band, this is ultimately an insult to it's worshipping audience especially when Nesmith goes on to say such things as their music is "shallow and banal" as part of the show when the audience has bought every single, album and everything with their face on.
His comments both on screen and off screen led to many problems as he was the one who called a private press conference to say that they didn't play their own instruments (no crime these days!) so they made an album where they did (only one mark you, with the recording of the show it was impossible to do both). The show was axed after 58 episodes and without the much needed publicity and press hostility towards these frauds the record sales dried up. Peter left the band, Nesmith soon followed and soon they all followed suit .

But what remains are some hilarious episodes that capture an era, and if you only ever see one make sure it's fairytale!!!!!.
