The film Head opens with the members of the band committing suicide off a suspension bridge during the opening ceremony of said bridge, during the film they are also pieces of dandruff in the actor Victor Matures hair, swallowed by a vacuum cleaner, involved in rigged boxing matches, in a WW2 trench and it just gets stranger and stranger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
However the simple story of head when all the strange imagery is analysed is it is the story of the manufactured trap that they were stuck in and peoples perception of them due to the bands conception
Specific imagery is used to back this up, for example, the band are constantly being forced into a black box, this represents the way they are boxed up and manufactured, also it represents the life styles they were forced to live, e.g. the black represents the isolation imposed on people of this career. The total isolation from normal life

the inside of the next mode of transport to get to the next dressing room to get to the next hotel room then the next plane, cab or car to get to the next dark dressing room to get to the next hotel room, an endless cycle of black to black with the one brief period.
of light when they hit the stage, to which there is one shining example of their raw talent on stage with a fantastic rendition of circle sky.
Other useful pieces of imagery used to back up this story are scenes such as Micky Dolenz blowing up a cocoa cola machine with a tank, as coke is of course a clean cut piece of American commercialised culture and the smashing of it was symbolic of the Monkees own predicament. The veteran actor Victor Mature is used to strange effect to represent the Monkees record company RCA Victor, he is depicted as a giant and in one scene the Monkees are recording an advert as dandruff in Victor Matures hair.
There are lots of scenes of rebellion amongst them one such scene is of Michael and Micky filming a western where eventually Micky tires of the play acting and walks straight through the back drop with Michael hot on his heels, they reach the studio cafe after everyone else has left in disgust of the monkees and they are insulted by a surly waiter/waitress female impersonator.
But my two favourite scenes if you must make me choose are the scene where Davy opens a bathroom cabinet only to find a huge bloodshot eye staring back at him!!!!!

The look on his face is a picture and his attempts to explain to Peter are hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get it either Micky!

my other favourite scene is Michael's surprise birthday party through a bizarre series of events he is led to a creepy room only to be serenaded by happy birthday, showered with gifts and sat on a throne, when everyone stops dancing he proceeds to verbally abuse the party guests by saying they scared him half to death and that he does not like surprises, birthdays or in fact Christmas
In short I love this film and you have really got to see it to understand it!  even then you might not!!!!!!!!!

go to the Monkees tv series
