The percussionist has many more instruments to learn than the average instrumentalist.  My students have had great success beginning on the bells (xylophone).  They learn all of the techniques required to play the snare drum.  From there, students learn bass drum, cymbals, woodblock, cowbell, tambourine, maracas, and even the drumset!

HISTORY

Percussion instruments were invented when man first started banging out a rhythm.  The first real drums were made from hollowed tree trunks, with animal skins stretched over them.  Later, drums were also made of bone, metal, or earthenware (such as clay).  Eventually the drumhead was attached using rope, making it adjustable.  Also some drums had gut snares added to one of the drumheads, giving it a different sound.  Drums appear in the art of many ancient civilizations including Egypt, India, Sumeria, China, Persia, Greece, and Rome.

Most (if not all) of my percussionists begin on the bells.  The bells use many of the same techniques of the snare drum, and all percussionists learn them eventually.
