THE BRASS FAMILY HISTORY The baritone and euphonium developed from various ancient trumpet-like instruments. They both appeared in the 1830's, shortly after valves were invented for trumpets and cornets. From 1850 on, they were used in military and school bands, and often were featured as solo instruments. The tuba also came from ancient trumpet-like instruments, although more directly it came from an instrument called a serpent. The serpent was invented in the 1500's and was originally wooden with a leather covering and six holes to change notes. The serpent changed over the next 300 years and the tuba was really born after the invention of the valves, around 1830. The tuba looks very much like the euphonium pictured above, except larger. There have been many different shapes of tuba, usually created to solve problems, since the instrument is so large. Marching poses an incredible problem, unless you have a tuba called a sousaphone. The sousaphone wraps around the player's body, resting on his or her shoulder. It is named after John Philip Sousa, a writer of many marches. LINKS Baritone, Euphonium, or ?? Which
