2008 RULES FOR MODIFIED SCHOOLS

PITCHING DISTANCE:
Will be in Nassau County, 40' unless an existing cemented pitchers plate is set at between 36' to 40'. This is Section VIII ruling voted on by the Athletic Council late in 2007.
ALL BASES: must be spiked in place. If there is a loose home plate, inform both teams before the game begins. If the pitching plate is loose, a line may be drawn for them to pitch from if they both agree.  DO NOT USE LOOSE BASES!!!  DOUBLE FIRST BASE IS MANDATORY IN 2008. DO NOT USE  A DOUBLE FIRST BASE THAT IS NOT ONE PERMANENTLY BONDED UNIT. YOU WOULD BE PUTTING YOURSELF AND THE ASSOCIATION IN JEOPARDY. Do Not play a game if a team does not have CHIN STRAPS. A Game can not be played without approved face masks/face guards or double ear-flapped approved helmets for all offensive players.

BALLS: Ideally they should be optic yellow .470 core with red seams.

15 RUN RULE after five or more complete innings.  No visiting team can win by 15 run rule in partial inning.

ALL A.S.A. AND N.Y.S. FASTPITCH RULES are in effect along with other 2008 rules. This includes bunting, stealing, dropped third strike rules and appropriate courtesy runners rules.

A minimun or 9 players Bat and 9 play the field. 10 may BAT and 10 may PLAY THE FIELD.  Possible 11 player DP Game, (interpreted as 11 Bat and any 10 of those 11 play the field. YOU CAN NOT START WITH 8, can not play with 8 at any point during a modified (JHS) game. If you started with 10 and you are forced to play with 9 under the shorthanded provision inthe rules an "out" is recorded each time the missing batters batting position comes up..

There is no penalty for an unannounced sub!!!!!

NO NEW INNING after generally allotted 2 hour game time.  Games starting at 4:00 pm can go until no inning being allowed to begin after 6:15 to afford for the completion of such a contest by 6:30.  Games starting at 4:15 or later have a 2 hour time  after which no new inning can start. There is no such thing as all play ceases after 2 hours, we finsih the inning as necessary
THUNDER AND LIGHTNING is heard or seen, call for a minimum 30 minutes suspension of play for each occurrence.
NON APPROVED BATS: Go to the internet site, www.softball.org under the heading equipment/bats. New ruling for 2008 any bat barrel that rattles when shaken or has excessive exterior wear is not to be used.
No JEWELRY can be worn. All subs must be reported to the plate umpire and scorekeeper. All players ( starters and subs) can leave the game and re-enter the game one more time. A pitcher who legally re-enters the game may pitch again. You get 3 defensive conferences per game (7 innings)

                               
Junior Var. and Varsity Rules
Gloves:
Gloves with  white, gray or yellow optic circles on the outside, giving the appearance of a ball, are illegal for all players.

Helmets: NOCSEA SEAL AND CHIN STRAPS ARE MANDATORY FOR ALL BATTERS, BASERUNNERS, ON DECK BATTERS AND STUDENT COACHES

DOUBLE FIRST BASE: MANDATORY AT ALL LEVELS OR PLAY. Make sure that this base is a manufactured one permanetly bonded unit. Do not play a game if this double first base is not of one piece!!!! If you do, you are putting yourself and the Association in jeopardy.

Beads in Hair
: NYSPHSAA  states that beads in the hair are not permitted

BALL INSIDE THE GLOVE
: The pitching rule governinng "hands coming together" shall be interpreted as follows: The ball must be INSIDE the glove.
(Merely touching the outside of the glove with the ball DOES NOT satify this)

Tie Breaker Rule
: Starting with the top of the 10th Inning and each half inning thereafter, the offensive team shall begin its turn at bat with the player who is scheduled to bat last in that respective half inning being placed on second base.

OBSTRUCTION
;  This may be ruled when a fielder not in possession of the ball and in position to make a tag or not in the act of fielding a batted ball impedes the progress of a runner or batter0runner who is legally running the bases. We should think of this: catch the ball, block the base and then make the tag.
