The
West Macedonia Community is adjacent to High Point's downtown and has suffered
economic decline and inner city blight over the last 20 years due to movement of
industry to the greenfields south of town. Community agencies, police officers,
and residents of the Macedonia community report high levels of poverty, crime,
and unemployment. Through needs assessments, residents identified
immediate needs, such as access to education and job skills, affordable housing,
safe streets, and opportunities for youth to have positive experiences and good
role models. The neighborhood itself has zoning and properties suitable
for industry, retail, and varied types of housing, as well as several churches.
This area is located near the High Point campus of Guilford Technical Community
College (GTCC).
The COPC is the vehicle of implementation for services and resources that were
identified by residents as primary needs during a two year EPA study. HUD
realized that universities can provide knowledge and expertise towards
revitalization efforts. Thus, the Center for the Study of Social Issues of
UNCG began working with the City of High Point to identify ways to revitalize
Macedonia. Currently, the City of High Point is spearheading a redevelopment
process for the community and COPC is providing assistance through the programs
offered.
