The Story of Charmed
Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell are three sisters.  One day, they inherit their Grand-mother's San Francisco Manor where they were brought up when their mother died.  When looking around in the attic, Phoebe, the youngest, finds an ancient, antique, green-covered book lying in the bottom of a trunk, under a pile of dust.  When she opens the front cover she finds a century-old wood-carving of three women standing in a circle casting spells.  And, on the first page, an elaborately scrolled incantation: 'Hear, now the words of the witches.  The secrets we hid in the night.  The oldest of spells are invoked here.  The great gift of magic is sought.'

As the Halliwell sisters begin to discover, the Book Of Shadows is more than just an antique publication in their attic.  The book foretells the arrival of three sisters, The Charmed Ones, the most powerful of a long-line of witches.  While the legend proclaims them as protectors of the innocent, it also warns them of warlocks and evil beings (taking the forms of everyday people) who will stop at nothing to steal their new powers.  When Prue, Piper and Phoebe start to learn more about the book, and the unique powers that have been bestowed upon them, they must set aside their differences and stand together as they have a more important cause to fight for.
Season one:
The Halliwell sisters are reunited in their childhood home : an old manor in San Francisco, when their Grandmother passes away.  The eldest is Prue, a mature, responsable, driven and serious (though flirty) museum curator, the middle-sister, Piper, is the calm, quiet, earthy and creative  mediator and last but by no means least is Phoebe, irresponsable, immature, free-spirited and fun-loving.

Prue receives the power of Telekinesis: She can move objects with her mind (using hands or eyes)
and that of Astral Projection.

Piper receives the power of Temporal Stasis : Freezing/stopping time.  She can freeze everything but good witches and can selectively freeze things.  Later on this power evolves so that if she concentrates, she can
speed up the molecules instead of slowing them down, therefore blowing things up.

And the power of Clairvoyance (sight of past/future) is bestowed upon Phoebe.  She just has to touch something related to the person/thing she wants to have a vision of and she gets a premonition.  She then also develops the power of self-levitation.

Together, they make up the Power of Three.

Other characters met in this series are:

Detective Andy Trudeau (T.W.King) was introduced in the first episode.  He was an old childhood friend of Prue's, her first love, her high-school sweet-heart.  When they meet again - due to a murder - their love is rekindled and grows despite the frustrating feeling - more like intuitional knowledge - that she is keeping a secret from him.  Andy dies at the end of the first season by the demons Tempus and Rodriguez, shortly after learning Prue and her sisters' secret.  His partner Darryl Morris (Dorian Gregory) , who has learned the sisters' secret, that Andy carried to the grave, remains the Halliwell's loyal friend and police contact.
Prue reappearing - Astral Projection

using Telekinesis
Piper freezing time  Piper blowing something up
Phoebe getting a premonition
Darryl and Andy (from left to right)
At first, Leo Wyatt (Brian Krause) was just presented in the series as a really cute handyman, who was immediately smitten with Piper, and vice versa.  The sisters soon learn that he is much more... Leo is a Whitelighter, a sort of Guardian Angel for good witches.  When he travels in a sprinkle of light, it is called 'orbing', and he has the power to heal.  He was assigned to the Charmed Ones as a guardian and protector.  He was actually a young doctor in WW2 and an exceptionally good person so when he died, he was made an immortal Whitelighter.  When Leo and Piper fall in love, there are many obstacles they must overcome, as Whitelighters cannot fall in love with witches...

Victor Bennett (James Read or sometimes Tom Denison), the girls' long-lost father makes an appearance in this season.  Phoebe and Piper hardly knew him and don't remember him, but Prue remembers all too well how he abandonned them (because he couldn't cope with the fact the girls were witches) and she becomes very suspicious and remains unforgiving.
The Charmed Ones' father :
Victor
Patty Halliwell  (Finola Hughes) was the daughter of Penny Halliwell (below) and the mother of the Charmed Ones.  The Charmed Ones see their mother again (That 70s Episode) in this season after 20 years when she was drowned by a water demon shortly after Phoebe's birth.  She had the power of freezing time like Piper.  Later in the seasons, we discover that Victor, the girls' father (above) was not her only love, and that this illegal love affair with a Whitelighter, Sam, brings more than she bargained for...
The Charmed Ones' mother :
Patty Halliwell
Penelope 'Grams' Halliwell was the Charmed Ones' grandmother and Patti's mother.  She was married many times but 'Jack Halliwell' was Patti's mother.  When Patti died, she raised the girls in the old San Franciscan Mansion mentionned above.  When the girls were small, she binded their powers so that warlock Nicholas couldn't hurt them.  She was going to bind the powers permanently but died before she got the chance.  Her death of a heart attack unlocked the sisters' powers and caused them to reunite in the old Manor.  They meet her again for the first time since her death in this season (Is there a woogy in the house - That 70s episode) and from then on also seek her help when they need it (e.g.she turns the pages of the Book of Shadows when they are uninspired as to which spell to use.)
The Charmed Ones' maternal grandmother: Penny Halliwell
Melinda Warren, was the first witch in the Halliwell line, the charmed ones' great great great...grandmother.  She is also invoked in the first season (The Witch is Back) to hepl the girls fight a warlock seeking revenge.  melinda had all of the girls' powers (freezing time, moving things with her mind and premonitions) and when she came back she was very proud of the book of shadows and what it had become.  For the Halliwell family tree, click here.

Grandmother (x 6): Melinda Warren.
Rex Buckland (Neil Roberts), Prue's boss from the Bucklands Auction house appears in this season  (I've got you under my skin -> Wicca Envy) as well as his assisstant, Prue's rival, Hannah Webster (Leigh-Allyn Baker).  Prue never particularly likes either of them and quite rightly as in Wicca Envy, we discover that Rex is a secret warlock and he tries to frame Prue using his powers.  He then dates Phoebe to complicate matters.  the sisters suspect them and fight with them (Hannah is also evil and magical and has the power of turning into a panther, she uses this power to fight with them).  But naturally, the charmed ones win and Rex and Hannah disappear in a puff of smoke.

And last of all, the infamous Inspector Rodriguez (Carlos Gomez), killer of Inspector Andy Trudeau makes his first (and thankfully last) appearance in this season.  He first appears (The power of two/Love Hurts/Deja Vu all over again) as a simple Inspector but at the end of 'Love Hurts', we discover he is an evil demon seeking to kill the Charmed Ones (with the help of the Demon Tempus).  Fortunately, he dies in the Season Finale when Prue deflects his own energy ball back onto himself.

Season two:
In Season two, the girls continue their battle against the forces of evil, and the same characters from season 1 remain, but a few new ones are introduced, and a few old ones evolve:

Leo Wyatt, the whitelighter and Piper's boyfriend, had to leave at the end of season 1 because he couldn't permit himself to be involved emotionally with Piper.  When he returns, Piper and he have split up.  She struggles between he and Dan (see below), and finally chooses Dan.  But Leo does not give up.  He loves her so much that when she falls ill, he heals her (though it is against the whitelighter's laws) and gets his wings clipped.  When Piper finds this out she is touched. Finally she cannot deny that her heart belongs with Leo and they get back together, even though this is strictly forbidden...

Dan Gordon moves in next door to the Charmed ones with his niece Jenny in season 2.  He is very good-looking and he and Piper immediately notice eachother.  Piper, who has all this time been trying to get over Leo, decides that she has to take her life in her own hands and not just sit around waiting to see if Leo ever comes back.  So,
she goes out with Dan, on whom she has a crush.  When Leo returns, Piper struggles between Dan and leo but finally chooses Dan.  Leo does not give up.  When Dan is away in New York, Piper finally gives in to the temptation and goes back with Leo.  They hide this from Dan for a moment because she cannot bear to dump him.  Finally, she spilts up with Dan and goes back to Leo but Dan just doesn't seem to get over her.  At the end of the season, a genie tricks her into making a wish so that Dan finds outthat she is a witch.  Dan doesn't deal with this news so she casts a spell for him to forget and move on with his life.  So he moves away and we don't here of him again.

Last of all, in season 2, Jack Sheridan is introduced.  The first Charmed one he meets is Prue.  He likes her but she hates him and was very upset when he started working at Bucklands as her partner.  They date for a short while but when Prue quits her job at Bucklands we hear no more about him.
Season three:
Season three is a major turning point in the Charmed Ones' lives and aswell as the introduction of new characters, the same characters from the previous seasons are developped:

Leo Wyatt, the whitelighter and Piper's boyfriend, takes Piper by surprise at the beginning of the season by proposing to her.  At first, Piper, shocked, refuses through fear of the complications that would follow this.  But after a heart-to-heart with her sisters, and after realising that, doing the dangerous job she does, she could die at any moment, she accepts as she knows she does not want to die not being his wife.  However, this is far from the end of their struggles.  The Elders, thinking that a relationship between a Whitelighter and a witch would affect the efficiency of their jobs and the way they were carried out, strictly forbid any such relationship.  So, Piper and Leo try to conduct a hidden wedding, in secret from the all-seeing, all-knowing Elders.
