Aye.. wushups peepos? Welps.. these guidelines below are just a couple of suggestions that I came up with when it comes to making your site. Keep in mind that these are just tips of what you "SHOULDN'T" do when you make a site. I admit.. that some of these things below I've done as well.. but we're all humans right? We all make mistakes. ^_^
Clashing Backgrounds and Text
How often have you came across a website where someone has tiled an image that they liked and used the most horrid text color scheme? It happens on a regular basis. Or how about if they had just a plain background color.. such as bright neon pink and yellow text? This is something that you DEFINITELY have to avoid when it comes to your site. Try to steer clear of image backgrounds; while they are useful, don't use them unless you have something thats nice and discreet. People come to your website to read the content.. not to be blinded by your flashy background and font colors! Give your viewers a break. If you must use bright colors.. try to keep it to a minimum. If you're to use a black background color.. then use a font color that contrasts with black so that the content is easier for the viewers to read. Make sure that the text color you use does not clash with the background either.
Midi's.. Wav's.. Etc..
Please do not be tempted to have little wav, midi or other music files playing in the background. They are just annoying and plain out tacky. Sure.. they add a sense of "FLARE" to your site.. but it can also bug the living hell out of the person that's viewing your site. What if it's something that they do not prefer to listen to? Or what if they're already listening to their own music? If that's the case.. then they'll be forced to turn off the song that they were listening to just because another music is forced upon them. If you just have to have one, please give the viewer an option to turn it off!
Spelling and Grammar Errors
Yeah.. I admit.. I DO have some misspelled words on my site. But most of them were made on purpose. But if you want a professional-looking site, then I suggest you check your spelling and use of grammar. It'll make your site look better.. and not to mention that it'll also be able to help the person that's looking at your site to understand what you're trying to get across. Sticky Caps are also a no-no. WhAt ArE sTiCkY CaPs YoU aSk? Well.. there's your answer. StIcKy CaPs Is WhEn YoU tYpE LiKe ThIs. Save yourself the trouble and put what you learned back in elementary school to good use.
Under Construction
It gets very annoying when people try to look at your site.. and a big sign confronts them saying "UNDER CONSTRUCTION!" ALL sites are forever under construction. Even the sites that seem to have been up for centuries are always constantly being updated.
404 Page Not Found
This (and it's other derivatives such as the Web Hoster's typical message "This Page Has Moved or No Longer Exists") is probably the most annoying thing to come across when surfing. If you do bring your website down or you do move etc., please inform everyone that links to you to change their links. Quite often it's a simple mistake of forgetting to upload an html document; but whatever the case, do your best to avoid this!
Webrings / Cliques / "I Support the blah blah cause."
Once you've got your website online you'll want to join up to a few webrings to help boost your hit stats and to let people know you exist. While this is cool, do not get over eager and subscribe to a dozen webrings! By doing this and placing the webring code all on the webpage, you're creating an unbelievably tacky look and a slow download speed. Just think about it, you've got the images for each and every webring loading on that one page, of course it'll take forever. If you just have to be a member of those webrings, I suggest creating a separate webring page and maybe using smaller webring images. Also, as much as it's nice to support a cause etc. please, again, don't go overboard. If you want to support every cause in existance (believe me I've seen pages that have tried!) put all the links and images on a seperate page!
Images.. Images.. and oh what's this? MORE images?!
Images are good.. Images are fun.. Images load very SLOW! We've all come across webpages that had a shitload of images all in one page. Whether it be because it was a photo gallery.. or that person just thought that having a lot of images on their site made their site look less boring. If that were the case.. here's a newsflash for you.. Your site will never be visited ever again. ^_^ Not everyone has fast loading computers and having big ass images all in one page makes them push that little button called the "BACK" button. So I guess all of those images on your site was useless because they didn't even stick around to see it anyways. If you are to have a photo gallery.. then make your image SMALLER! That way.. faster loading is possible. Thumbnails is one way you can make an image smaller.
Copying and Pasting
This right here is one of the reasons why I have my "No Right Clicking" code up on my site. Why you ask? Because people tend to steal images without asking. But actually.. nahs.. that's not the reason. The main reason is because people don't know how to save an image properly. They tend to direct connect. This is when they copy a picture from another site without naming it differently to their own server. When you do this.. you are slowing down the other person's site and you're also increasing their bandwidth! That's not a really fair thing to do.. considering the fact that you're the one who's causing this person's site to slow down and thus making the images load a whole lot slower. Why does this happen? Because YOU have the SAME image on YOUR computer. So if you're to save an image.. save it with a different name. This also helps you because if you were to post the image on your site.. and the site that you stole it from suddenly closed down.. then your image wouldn't show..
Navigation
Mare sure the navigation in your site is easy to find and easy to use. Using frames is an excellent way when it comes to the navigation on your site because they'll always stay in the same place. But they are pretty hard to use if you don't know how to use them. But if frames to you isn't an option.. then make sure that the navigation is on every page so that it'd be easier for the viewer to get around in your site without having to click the "back" button to get back to the menu.
Frequent Updates
It's all about content. That's the main purpose people go to your site to being with.. to check out what you have to offer. This is where updating your site often comes along. Frequent updates grabs the viewers attention and can gurantee frequent visits from them as well. If they see that you haven't updated your site since forever, then more then likely, you won't be seeing them again.
Interaction
Make the visitor involved by adding freebies or interaction!
Originality
And last.. but definitely not least.. be original! No one likes going to a site that looks like every other site they've come across. Put your own touch to your site.. And of course.. have FUN! That is afterall what it's all about.
