SKY BLUE and BLACK
Rhymie Sweet

I wrote you a poem when I was just a girl
It was all rhymie sweet and sunshiny days
Wishing you a Happy Birthday
In my special little girl way
These days aren't so sweetly filled
Rhymes don't flow with words like
Cancer, Tumor, and what a Biopsy will show
And your eyes look to me expectantly
Like mine to you so long ago
You want me to say, "It's ok. Everything will be fine"
The irony isn't lost on me
Everything inside me screams
You will be ok
But there's a scared little girl in each of us
Frantically searching for the light of day
And faith?
Faith can be heard in distant footsteps
Echoing down a darkened hall
I'll hold your hand
You hold mine
We can look into each other's eyes
It's not so scary that way
Together
We can try to remember something
From a rhymie sweet day

Better Days
Twisted Dark
Stories To Tell
Anger

Walking away today
Cool breeze stings my face
The anger sets in
It's not fair that it's you lying there
Scared
Kindness pours from your every move
Every thought
Every word
You softly  ask, "Is there hope?"
As if you haven't the right to ask at all
I want to wrap you in blankets of love
Shield you from the days to come
Tears brim then flow
As memories of what we had and what we have
Collide
Somewhere in between I stake my anger
I don't want this lesson
Not yet
"Please stay"
As if I haven't the right to ask
Let's give it another 25 years or so
But the storm clouds obscure my view
Leaving me cold, angry, and scared
Like you

We Know What To Do

Give us your pain
The three of us
Born to you
Will know what to do
We learned from you
Lessons on sacrifice
How to love, hope, and pray
What to do when there are no words to say
Give us your pain
What's been inflicted on you
We can turn it into something good
The way you taught us to
But don't ask us to go away
To leave you alone
You never showed us how to stop
With you there was always a way
So when the last whisps of hope are gone
We will still be trying
Still willing you on
Give us your pain, Mom
We know what to do
We'll stand side by side
Linked arm and arm
The three of us
And you

Did I See You?

Black bird calling atop a tall pine tree
Mourners gather together to view
Did I see  you
Circle slowly above me
Gliding
Beyond the sorrow
The pain
Your remains
Black bird free fall flight
Soaring  high then out of sight
Did I see you
Slow just a bit for us to glance
Your happy trail
Circle dance
You can fly
By me anytime
Black bird's calling
I'll come running day or night
To take a flight
My heart, and you
Circling, circling, high above
Soothing sorrow out of love

Room 9

I don't know if I need to explain
The pain; Excruciating
Like you could never imagine
Maybe you know
Like you never want to feel ever again
Trapped
A living nightmare
Closing my eyes brings the horror
Vivid pictures of that night
Hospital corridors cold; Empty
The bed in room 9
She was still in it; room silent
Machines switched off like her
We filed in with our kisses
With our love
So cold; already gone
I looked around for her
Expectantly
A touch; A rush of love
It was her
I was exuberant for a moment
The pain remains
Subdued
At times intense
We battle my pain, and I
A good day
A bad year
A good moment
Bitter tears
She lifts me up
And I fall
Up again
Touch and go
Like that night
In room 9
