Freedom of worship was the main factor in most of our ancestral migrations and so our churches have always been our common heritage. As each church was established an interesting story unfolds. We can get a brief glimpse into our forebears everyday lives.

As the bells ring out today, let them remind us that they were the messengers of the wilderness, pealing seven times for worship, tolling out the age of the dead and calling out the alarm.

The first settlers to the area practiced the Reformed or Lutheran faith. They worshipped together in their homes. Then in 1727, they organized and the first church was built, Tulpehocken Trinity Reformed Church. This church, seen on the right, was the start of many churches of many different denominations to be built wihthin the next 100 years. As the town grew, so did the varied religions.

Today, Myerstown and Jackson Township have a wide spectrum of denominations.

On a typical Sunday while driving through the countryside of Jackson Township, you may spot a gathering of the Amish. Since they do not worship in a church, they have a circuit of homes in which they worship. Services are followed by a meal for all those who desire to stay. Horses are unhitched from the buggys and placed in a barn.

So, if you are in the area, we invite you to come and worship with us. What ever church you may choose, we would be glad to see you there.
