~*~*~*CHILDHOOD MEMORIES*~*~*~

Memories are locked deep in my mind;
If I unlock the door, it's there I find
My childhood days, and places I've been-
I can almost live them over again.

My Grandparents' House seems a castle to me,
And there in front grows my favorite tree.
The grass so green, the hedge trimmed so right-
Oh, my! Such a beautiful sight!

Grandpa Smiley, and Uncle John
Trying to drown moles in the front lawn.
Grandma makin' butter in the wooden churn;
"Come on, Grandma. Let me have a turn!"

I've got a secret spot up in the Elm tree.
I climb there often, and you can't find me;
I think I can almost touch the sky,
But I'll climb down for some gooseberry pie!

I've got Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins, too;
So many that there's always fun things to do.
Play tag, or hop-scotch, or play in the Park,
Or play "kick the can" until way after dark.

Marlene and Peggy are sure lots of fun;
You ought to see the three of us run!
Down to Uncle George's, we'll have a foot race;
(Of course, I always come in first place!)

But, I'm using present tense, and it's all time gone by.
I'm grown up now, and too old to cry.
So what the heck! There's lots of miles ahead,
I'm gonna' have fun until I drop dead!

I'm too fat to run very far,
And instead of walking, I ride in my car.
But I can still laugh and show my "ornery" streak;
(Although I'm beginning to look antique.)

I haven't climbed a tree in years,
And if I tried, I'd strip my gears!
But, inside my mind, I'm still a kid,
And I'll always remember the things I did!
