SYNOPSIS

  • Buffy fills the gang in on everything that's gone on since she started to work with the Initiative, and they question whether Riley was involved in the death mission Maggie sent Buffy on. Adam escapes through a vent and out into the real world. Buffy arms the group with weapons and makes plans to find somewhere to hide out. They agree upon Xander's basement. Riley shows up at Giles's place asking Buffy for information, and recognizes Spike as Hostile 17. He gets upset about Buffy keeping the vampire hidden, but Spike manages to get away. Riley doesn't want to accept what the rest of them are saying about Professor Walsh and the Initiative.

Adam approaches a young boy playing in the park and questions what the boy is. Doctor Angleman slips in a pool of blood as he enters room 314 and finds Professor Walsh dead. Giles is grumpy when he wakes up in Xander's basement and the rest of the girls are watching cartoons. They talk about tough relationships, then turn the TV on to see a news story about a young boy who has been killed and mutilated. Riley talks with Forrest about what happened with Buffy. Forrest expresses his distaste for Buffy and then Graham arrives and informs them that Professor Walsh is dead.

When Riley and Forrest go to see Walsh's body, Forrest accuses Buffy of staking Maggie. Going against Dr. Angleman's orders, Riley instructs the other commandos to go out and search for the Polgara demon. Forrest and Graham enter a crypt and almost find Spike, but he's hiding. While Buffy tries to apologize to Riley at the scene of the crime, Riley informs her that Walsh is dead and asks if Buffy is happy about that. Willow goes to Tara's dorm room where Willow asks Tara if she'll help her do a spell to call on the Goddess Thespia.

Buffy searches for information at Willy's but Riley also shows up, very angry. He's acting very weird, and shaking as he questions Buffy's intentions and even pulls a gun on a supposedly innocent woman. Buffy consoles Riley as she sees that he's sick and only getting sicker. He's shaking and sweating and scratching his hand so badly that it bleeds. Buffy tries to get him to rest and get better. Buffy asks for Xander to go undercover with her, but Anya doesn't want Xander going anywhere with Buffy.

Willow and Tara start to perform their spell but when Tara is supposed to blow dust over a square, she throws it under a bed instead, causing the spell to not work. Dressed as a scientist, Buffy gets herself and Xander - who is dressed in fatigues - into the Initiative. Riley wakes up and when Willow tries to stop him from going after Buffy, he pushes her to the ground and runs. Doctor Angleman talks to another scientist about their commandos being given drugs in their meals and the lack of those drugs are causing Riley's health deterioration.

Spike goes into Willy's bar but is met by an unfriendly demon. He is badly beaten up by the demons for associating with the Slayer. They threaten that if he's seen around again, they'll kill him. Inside the Initiative, Buffy follows after and grabs Doctor Angleman, demanding information. Riley arrives to help Buffy, but he doesn't want to accept the fact Professor Walsh was bad. Buffy wants to get answers about 314 and she gets an answer when Adam drops a dead body to the floor and reveals his presence. Adam is searching for answers about the world, and has returned to the Initiative so he can get answers about himself and who he is.

He has a disk drive in his chest and when he inserts a disk labelled "Adam" he offers information that reveals that he's part human, demon and machine. He explains that even though Riley had a real mother, Maggie was also his mother as she shaped and built him into a human machine so he could work for the Initiative. Adam kills Dr. Angleman and injures Riley before escaping again. The other commandos enter and take Riley away. The next day, Buffy talks to Willow about how Adam is out there and very dangerous. At the hospital, Riley lays in bed holding a scarf Buffy gave him earlier. Even though Buffy can't see him, he has part of her to hold on to.

TRIVIA

  • The shot with Adam and the little boy is an homage to Boris Karloff's 1931 movie Frankenstein. When Frankenstein's monster escapes, he walks through a forest and comes upon a little girl, Maria, who is throwing flowers into a pond. The monster joins her in the activity but soon runs out of flowers. At a loss for something to throw into the water, he looks at Maria and moves toward her. In all American prints of the movie, the scene ends here. But as originally filmed, the action continues to show the monster grabbing Maria, hurling her into the lake, then departing in confusion when Maria fails to float as the flowers did. This bit was deleted because Karloff - objecting to the director's interpretation of the scene - felt that the monster should have gently put Maria into the lake. This scene is restored in the video cassette reissue.

CONTINUITY

  • Giles' tattoo of the Mark of Eyghon can be seen briefly. The Mark was explained in season two's The Dark Age.

  • Anya refers to Halloween again when she says “It’s not like he was in the ‘Nam. He was G.I. Joe for one night.”

  • Angleman is skewered and killed by Adam, exactly as Maggie Walsh was in the previous episode. And just like Maggie's his corpse is reanimated to service Adam's machinations in Primeval.

  • Willy is back. He owns the demon bar in town and was introduced in season two's What's My Line? (Part 1). Although the bar is seen again in later episodes, Willy never reappears.

  • The plot thickens between Tara and Willow. Tara sabotages the spell she and Willow do to find a demon. We find out why in Family. The two get closer: "I've been thinking about that last spell we did all day."

  • Channel 14, last seen reporting on the cave in caused by Spike in The Harsh Light of Day, report on Adam's killing of the little boy.

GOOFS

  • When Buffy describes what took place in the sewers, she says that the gate slammed down, and then she tried to use the gun. She actually used the gun first.

  • The same shot of Giles looking concerned is used twice.

  • Spike's hole in his t-shirt from where he was shot with the tracer has disappeared.

  • Riley points at Forrest with his left hand as he says, "You better not be saying what I think you're saying." In the next shot, Riley is pointing with his right hand.

  • The Polgara demon was captured the night before this episode starts. However, the second day into the episode, Riley says that "the Polgara demon we captured last week" must have killed Walsh.

  • Buffy takes the bandana out of her hair and wraps it around Riley's hand. A few moments later, she's wearing it again.

  • Adam puts a second disk in his drive without having taken out the first.

  • Angleman does not have a tear in his lab coat from his skewering, nor is he bleeding though there was blood on Adam's skewer.
