Most music homework for years 7,8 and 9 has two features:

Sometimes it is more reporting and sometimes it is more planning. Homework can involve a music notation or practicing for a performing keyboard assessment. It can also involve research.

Quality and marks from lowest to highest.

  1. A few basic facts in a few sentences (25-35 marks)
  2. Writing down a paragraph with 3-5 musical words or phrases.* (35-45)
  3. Writing down two paragraphs of description with 6-10 musical words or phrases.* (35-45)
  4. Writing 3 paragraphs with some opinion and examples as well as description with 10-15 musical words.(45-55)
  5. Writing more than 3 paragraphs with all the above features plus some comparison with other music or musical reference.

*Musical words are those used only in writing about music or have a purely musical context. e.g. "tambourine," "loud voice", repeated tune"

A paragraph has between 6 and 9 sentences.

N.B. Far more detailed marking schemes can be found in the teachers section

Form of presentation

Presentation

Which ever form of reporting or planning is chosen the work will have to be presented properly. Poorly presented work shows more about the attitude and effort of the student than their attainment.

Helpful examples

  1. Describing a composition

  2. Reporting how it was done

  3. Changes made and why

  4. Opinions: evaluation

  5. First composing ideas written down
