About Making Magickal Oils

Magickal oils are consecrated essential oils. They can be made from a single essential oil or a combination of them.

Essential oils are volatile aromatics extracted from botanicals. Technically, the term essential oil refers to essential oils that have been extracted by distillation (although some pressed oils, like citrus oils, also qualify). However, it is used also to refer to infused oils, where herbs or other botanicals are steeped in a carrier oil and the essential oils seep into the carrier oil. Both may be used for magickal purposes.

Distillation requires expensive equipment and large quantities of the component ingredients. If you wish to use distilled oils, it is simpler to purchase them from a reputable merchant. The following section, Distilled Oil Basics, addresses some of the safety concerns when using distilled oils.

Infusion is a much more practical technique. The ancient Egyptians used it, as well as common folk throughout history. The following sections, Infused Oil Basics and Extraction Methods for Infused Oils, discuss safety precautions and how to make your own infused oils.

A good basic consecration oil is olive oil with cinnamon and basil. You might also add ground ginger or red pepper flakes for anointing; elementally, they add fire.
