- Holy things or actions with which we ask for God to grant us
favors, especially spiritual ones. Examples include: blessings, exorcisms, and blessed
devotional objects like holy water, candles, scapulars, medals, rosaries, and pictures of
saints. They assist us indirectly to achieve grace. Sacramentals differ from
objects of superstition.

- Behind such objects is the idea that they make things happen
by a property innate to them, regardless of any other factors in play. A 'bad luck' item
is said to bring ill fortune no matter what. Good fortune is said to be absolutely
dependent on the possession of a 'good luck charm.' This perception is false. Additionally, grace is
not achieved through material acquisition; no material object cancels an evil act.

opposed to the spiritual and eternal.

- (As applied to god) independent of or beyond the material
universe, space and time.
