"Oh, Rook. I almost forgot. I found this among Tex's things and was wondering what you knew about it." He took the receipt and looked it over. "I don't remember this." "According to that, he bought some piece of jewelry from you for close to a thousand dollars. Are you sure you don't remember?" I knew Rook would have to know; he was a miser and kept track of all money that passed through his hands with meticulous accuracy. "Well, I do remember him coming in during the last month looking for a particular piece of jewelry..." Rook looked awful pained, like he was either having trouble remembering or he was reluctant to tell me anything about it. "He had some extra cash and needed to buy it, and I sold it to him. That's all." "What was it?" He paused, in deep thought. "I don't remember. I tell you what. I'll look through my inventory, and when you find Tex, come and tell me about it and I'll tell you what I found, alright?" It was obvious he wasn't going to tell me anymore than that, so I had to be satisfied. "Alright. I'll see you soon." (Go to 16.) |
