West River Mural Co. Tour

A Bit of History

In 1983 I began to work as a painter with some friends from college who had begun to form a construction company. I had good lessons early on in the trade and was mentored by an older friend from college who had painted from New York to Italy. He was in the process of getting his architect's license. I was in the fortunate position of being the one he was about to dump his painting business on. And we were in the fortunate position of being in NYC, where there is always work to be found. We handled everything from simple quick fix paint jobs to major renovations to restoration work in old fancy townhouses. In NYC you don't usually build. You renovate. We taped and painted lots of drywall sure, but we also did a lot of plastering in those old buildings. So I learned firsthand from an American/Italian artisan the art of stucco and plaster. This guy was so picky he would check the flatness and smoothness of his walls with a droplight. But those are lessons I never forgot and they have paid off well. As every good painter knows, the prep is more important than the paint in many cases.

And with a good solid arts background already, I started picking up the little choice jobs that sometimes come along with the painting. Restoration of decorative moldings, marbleizing, and some mural work. As time went by, one thing led to another and pretty soon I was hiring people to help me handle the painting work that I was contracting. And by now I was working pretty steadily along 57th St. in the heart of town.

I took lacquer lessons from a Japanese cabinet maker who I had met on a job and before long I was lacquering and polishing cabinets and even walls for this very upscale clientele. This experience led me to begin to experiment with different finishes. Slick and extra deluxe finishes for walls are my specialty. It's hard to see much but the color in this website, but I have a whole slew of sample finishes I do show as examples of my work. Painting can be lots more than just putting color on a wall. I layer it and work it like lacquer a lot of the time for a finish you'll have a hard time matching elsewhere. And putting it through this process also makes it exceptionally durable.

I now reside in Richmond, VA. But I still accept offers of work from NYC and elsewhere and do travel.

I personally guarantee all my work. If you're not happy with my work you shouldn't have to live with it or pay for it. I have always held to this principle and no one has ever returned any of my artwork or finishes, if that were actually possible, to me for a refund. I have a long list of very happy clients.

Throughout this website are photos of my work. Please be aware that this may cause some slow downloading time and pages may open slowly the first time you access them on a 56k or less connection. Please have a bit of patience, it's worth the one minute wait!
