Getting the job often requires a real nice drawing, not only to assure the client that you've got the right idea for them, but also to secure your contract. Likewise, whenever I do decorative finishes I never start a job without a sample board. It's required. So drawings and sample boards are always provided upon request (or sometimes even my own suggestion) prior to the start of any work. First time clients may be required to place a deposit if the request is a large one or the job does not seem secure at the start. Simple sketches are usually free to initiate further discussion. Likewise sample finishes on drywall are usually provided free, but all paint samples remain the property of West River Mural Co., always, no questions asked. Clients may only retain samples until the work is completed. And then they go into my stack as part of my portfolio. Extra nice renderings are not usually free because of the time involved but there are exceptions to that rule also, especially in the case of murals. I do use a lot of computer generated illustration these days to speed things up in that direction. But again, that is not always possible either. Sometimes a client will request drawings to help them sell a product or service. We handle this as a design service. Drawings freely submitted to designers or architects to help them in their negotiations with a client as pertains to work we will be doing remain the property of West River Mural Co. and are returned to us. These are considered working drawings and are a part of the design. They become a part of my portfolio at job completion. However, you can make all the copies you need of any drawings provided and you can keep those. Sometimes a client wants to buy the working drawing at job completion for framing. Not a problem.
