Another of my specialties is fancy
automotive finishing and polished lacquer work. Aside from the work you
see pictured here, I've done lot's of signs and store windows with
lacquers and airbrush too. Since computers came along the need for hand
lettering and storefront airbrush work has dwindled. But I still do it now
and then when vinyl isn't quite right or a client wants an extra special
look or large scale graphics that would look hideous in tiled layers of
vinyl. I spent a good few solid years doing polished lacquer work for
expensive European style kitchens when I was younger and now combine that
technical knowledge with my graphics and arts background for special
projects, a few of which you can see in the photos below.

These two busts are actually
made of cement. I painted them with acrylic urethane and then
polished them. True to life marbleizing! They stand the test of
time too. A client of mine in Florida was a small statuary place.
He kept a few pieces of mine similar to these on permanent
display outside in the blazing hot sun for a few years and they
still looked great!

That's me finishing up this fiberglass mermaid
and getting her ready to deliver. She's done in automotive finishes with an airbrush. This work has to be done quickly and perfectly on
the first go round or the paint job will be inferior and will
deteriorate in no time at all. These pieces travel around the
country and take a lot of abuse. I had an excellent working relationship
with this nationally known client. Below is a shot of the finished
project. We made lots of these. It's a kiddie ride, the whale cars
move around in a tub of water and lift up about 8' into the air as
it turns. |

This is the Little Drummer Boy. He
stands about 5.5' tall and beats a drum. These parts are similar
to the mermaid above and were for the same client. Again,
airbrushed automotive finishes on fiberglass. And again, like the
mermaid parts above, I painted many, many of these on a steady
basis until the client's company was sold in 1996. I guess he
finally got an offer he couldn't refuse! |

This piece doesn't really belong in the
airbrush section but for lack of any other place to show it, I
will include it here. Similiar to the work for the client above,
this is an example of a piece I painted many of, and again, the
base is fiberglass. Perhaps you recognize this work. There's one
in just about every Outback Steakhouse nationwide. This piece
was sold as part of a package which also included several other
pieces of artwork. I handled most of the painting for this long
term project to outfit the Outback franchise stores several
years back. Not the best example of my painting, but this is the
look the client wanted. And the rest is history! Actual size is
about 3'x4'. |
