HISTORY

Mujeres en Acción (MeA) was founded in 1991 in response to the violence that women in and around Chimaltenango suffered during the Civil War. Without homes and sufficient food for themselves and their children, many widows struggled to survive.

Mujeres en Acción sought a sustainable economic solution for these women. Mujeres en Acción used funding from World Accord, a Canadian NGO, to provide women with microcredit for their productive projects. MeA granted women loans of up to 100.00 Quetzales (approximately 12 U.S. dollars) for use toward their agriculture, commerce, craft, and livestock endeavors.

Since its founding, Mujeres en Acción has broadened its services to include education and training as well as technical support for its members.

VISION

To strengthen the capacity of community groups to develop their productive activities, through Social Organization, Training and Education, and Microcredit programs, in order to contribute to their individual and collective needs. To facilitate the transformation of these groups and communities as agents of their own development and to work toward their social, political and economic self-determination.
