| REPORT ON THE LIBRARY TUTORIAL |
| Introduction---- In preparing for a library tutorial there have been many sites searched on the Internet for reference materials. The opening page to this tutorial has posted a web site that seemed very interesting to me. It is listed at the George Mason University Libraries Web Tutorial. This site was set up for the students at the University to actively operate with their classes during the semester. My main idea came from this site. The idea of a tutorial that could help students learn basics about a library and how the sources can and do help students came into my mind. The age range of the target students for this tutorial would be flexible with the tutorial. In general the tutorial is geared to the middle grade level. Possibly the fifth grade and above. In middle school the students are exposed to more complex assignments that might require some research on the student's part. Knowing the basic understanding of the reference materials could help them with their endeavors. Design or Lesson Plan or Unit of Practice---- The start of the tutorial quiz has a lesson plan page. In it are the objectives that students should master after reviewing the tutorial. The library tutorial quiz has a few pages of resource materials and how they can be used. They are titled glossary pages one and two. There is a page for the Library Information Literacy Standards for Indiana schools. Other pages are of teacher responses to a few questions that were asked of them. The questions are about the library and the students ability to utilize the library resources, if they feel there are any problems with the students understanding basic library knowledge, and what the roll of the library should be concerning the curriculum area. Mrs. Lear is a library aide and isn't allowed to "teach" any library skills. You can read Mrs. Lear's responses here. Mrs. LaSpina has been a professional teacher for sixteen years. She has more favorable responses to the interview questions. You can read Mrs. LaSpina's responses here. A Unit Of Practice relating to the research process is Lost and Found: Reference, Research, and Reasoning. The students work in small groups doing activities such as searching the Internet and creating reports with the usage of computers. The students do their work in the Library Media Center under the supervision of the Library Media Specialist. The main porpuse of a tutorial is to let teachers, parents, and students know about the nine ideas that the state of Indiana has as far as expectations for students and literacy. There are many related ideas between the Library Information Literacy Standards and the English/Language standards. These standards identify the School Library Information Literacy Standards in the newly adopted Indiana Academic 2000 English/Language Arts Standards. The School Media Library Specialists (SMLS) will use these standards to work cooperatively with the building principals, classroom teachers, and other professional staff members to insure that student library informaiton literacy standards are taught through a collaborative effort in all curricular areas. Outcomes and observations---- This idea was started with great expectations in mind. As I have progressed through this course I found new ideas that I would like to incorporate into the tutorial. I have kept a record of the web sites I have viewed. Some of them are on the lesson plan page. There have been many setbacks during the construction of this tutorial project. Not being on campus to use the computer labs has been a major concern to me. I am a non-traditional student. I have been working at home on my tutorial with geocities to develop the web site. This tutorial is in the "toddler" stage and can only increase in time. I have seen some high tech web sites. I am willing to learn their programs in creating the different styles of web site. I need more time in a computer lab. Conlusions---- To be able to locate useful information for a report or project can be useful to students. The teaching of basic resources could be the beginning. Re-teaching and reinforcement of correct resources could be a lesson taught for a life time. A student needs to remember to also ask for help when it is needed. Making the most of the library resources can lead to exploration of avenues that can lead to a wealth of information that does exist in libraries. The help could be with printed materials, videos, or searching the Internet correctly. The concept of a library tutorial can help individuals understand the different sources and how they can help with a search. My idea of this tutorial quiz is to present the basic information about the printed resources of the library. The student needs to apply the informaiton to get the most out of it. If reading the information provided seems boring, how else would anyone get this information from a web site? After reading the information there is a small, yet growing, tutorial quiz for the viewer to take. With the two pages of information, then the tutorial quiz itself has right and wrong responses and the viewer can see their results imediately from their choices. In order for the student to have a feeling of worth the tutorial quiz is set up innitially with minimal wrong answers. As time goes on I would like to incorporate harder questions. Making the tutorial harder for those who find this beginning level to easy. Later, I would like to work on a tutorial for an effective Internet search with respect to the Boolean search method. The problems encounters with the development of this project have been having the ability to get to a lab, numerous searches for information about library tutorials, and the construction of it under geocities. I have experienced that the site has different looks to it with different browsers. While I do not have the technology to fully understand why it shows differently I understand that all browsers are not created equal. I have had fun building this web site for library information. I do hope to continue it in the future and possibly add the Internet search ideas into the tutorial. NETS and/or related standards framework---- The NETS standards for the students to gain competency in are #1, #2, #5, and #6. The students will know basic operations and concepts. They will understand social, ethical, and human issues. The students will also use technology research tools. And the students will have use of a technology problem for solving and decision making tools. |
