Global History I Course Outline

Global History is a two year required course. Global History I (R) will examine the history of the world from Neolithic times to the French Revolution. This course will study eras such as the ancient civilizations of Europe, China and India, the Age of Discovery and the Rise and Fall of Absolute Monarchs. Throughout the year, Social Studies skills such as the use of primary sources, the study of geography, analysis of charts, graphs and cartoons and writing skills will be stressed.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

1)To have students become aware of the chronological and thematic development of world history and culture.

2) To acquaint students with the interaction of diverse peoples over time.

3)To develop intellectual skills so students can make historical analyses and interpret evidence in a historical context.

4) To reinforce basic social studies' skills: note taking, paragraph and essay writing, reading comprehension, research, oral reporting as well as map, graph and chart analysis.

 

TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS USED:

World History: Patterns of Interaction, Hammond World Atlas, various newspapers and news magazines.

 

STUDENT EVALUATION

Full period written examination (a minimum of two each marking period), written quizzes and written as well as oral reports will represent 70%-80% of the quarterly grade. Written homework and class contribution will also be evaluated and will represent from 20% to 30% of the grade. A midterm will be given. The final exam equals 1/5 of the final average.

Note: A passing grade on the New York States Regents Exam in Global History is required for graduation. This exam is given at the conclusion of the Global History 2 course at the conclusion of 10th grade.
