Kevin discovers that having a female
roommate isn't going to be as fun as he fantasized. Trying to be courteous,
his chivalrous gestures are rebuked by Casey's strong willed independence.
When Anatole and his goat show up at the Owens home, Anatole claims it
is customary in his country for the father of a son who gives a boarder
the boot to take the boarder in. (Kevin kicked Anatole out in "Roommates"[
Season 5, Episode 3]) Less than pleased to have an ex-goat herder
living under his roof, George points Anatole and his goat towards the door.
In turn, Anatole puts a curse on the Owens family.
Kevin dreams of Casey as Cinderella
and Mr. Belvedere as the evil step mother, with himself as Prince charming
who comes to take Casey from her predicament to live with him in his kingdom.
The dream is broken when Casey/Cinderalla rebukes Kevin and tells him she
doesn't need saving. Kevin wakes to find Casey next too him, afraid of
the thunderstorm outside, with a severe warning to keep his hands to himself.
Thinking that he has finally broken the ice with Casey, Kevin is puzzled
when the next morning, she makes it clear nothing has changed between them.
Casey dreams of Kevin as a college
professor attending a party with his equally intellectual peers. She
finds herself as Kevin's ditzy wife who needs medication to stay reasonably
lucid. Everyone starts to call her "What a Bimbo!" which shocks her awake.
She wakes up to a knock on the door, which turns out to be their sleazy
landlord who seems to have less than desirable intentions towards her.
Kevin arrives just in time to save her. But Casey once again rebukes him,
saying she doesn't need saving.
Going to Mr. Belvedere for advice
on why he has mixed feelings towards Casey, Mr. Belvedere sees the unmistakable
signs of a young man in love.
Not taking their curse seriously
until each member of the family is plagued by bad luck, the family turns
to Mr. Belvedere to expel the demons. Turning to his book, "The Butler's
Guide to Hex Removal", he concocts a ceremony to eradicate the curse. Dressed
in turkey feathers, chicken bones and cheddar cheese, the Owens family
begin their ritual dance to the tune of "On Top of Old Smokey". Halfway
through the dance, Anatole shows up and tells them the curse was only the
twenty-four hour type.
Returning to his apartment, Kevin
finds the table set for a romantic dinner for two. Taking Casey in
his arms and kissing her, he is surprised when she returns his kiss. Admitting
that she likes Kevin, Casey promptly assures him he is still sleeping on
the couch, alone.

This is one of my favorite Kevin episodes.
The dream sequences were hilarious. It was fun seeing Mr. Belvedere in
full drag and Kevin with a mock British accent. This episode is part of
a larger subplot concerning Kevin's relationship with his girlfriend Casey.
I rather liked this relationship and I had wished that they would endure
and end up marrying eventually. In later episodes, we would learn that
this would not be.
The "curse" itself is one of the
more fantastic elements seen so far in the show. One of the reasons
that I liked the show so much was because of it's comfortable reality
spiced once in a while with unique and oftentimes funny situations brought
about by Mr. Belvedere's or any of the family member's eccentricities.
A fantastic element such as a supernatural "curse" shakes the reality of
the show a bit, but the funny way in which Mr. Belvedere and the family
try to fight the curse more than makes up for it.
At first I thought that the British
professor who guested in this episode was John Cleese of Monty Python/Fish
Called Wanda/James Bond fame. He looked like John Cleese, he stood like
John Cleese, and more importantly, he talked like John Cleese. Later
on, I would learn that he was, in fact, Michael Ensign. He played millionaire
Benjamin Guggenheim in James Cameron's Titanic. |
