Floyd
Darwin Covill was born on Jan. 5, 1918, the youngest of James and
Flora Fitchpatric Covill's 9 children, in Amboy, Il. Physically powerful
and a gifted athlete, Floyd played football and other sports at Illinois
State University (then Illinois State Normal University) in Normal, Il.,
where he met his wife. He was somewhat belatedly inducted into ISU's
athletic hall of fame in 1981.
Floyd served as an officer in the United States Navy during WWII, seeing combat in many amphibious assaults across the Pacific ocean. After the war he was a high school industrial arts teacher and athletics coach in Arcola, Il., Morton Il., and Dwight, Il. Recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict, he served as the ship's navigator aboard the USS Henrico (APA45), participating in the landing at Inchon. A trainscript of his personal log from the Henrico's 1951-1952 deployment to the western Pacific may be found here. After the Korean conflict he was the commanding officer of the Danville, Il. Naval Reserve Center and served as a staff officer for ComServRon 6 in Sasebo, Japan, eventually obtaining the rank of Commander, USNR. Upon his release from active duty in 1958 he moved to the Chicago suburb of Oak Park and became a woodshop teacher and athletics coach at nearby Elmwood Park High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1975. After his retirement, he and his wife Margaret moved to the Armstrong family farm near Streator, Il. Floyd was very active in Streator's veteran's organizations, serving as Post Commander of Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and as LaSalle County Commander. |
| Margaret Mary Armstrong Covill was born on Aug. 6, 1919 and grew up on the George A. Armstrong farm west of Reading, Il. "Marg" taught school in Streator, Il., was a substitute teacher in the Elmwood Park, Il. school system and taught 2nd grade at the Wesley School in Addison, Il. She was active in various organizations at the Ancona Church of Christ, Ancona, Il. |
