Honouring our British Veterans
27 May, 2004

Just prior to Memorial Day weekend, 2004, members of Streator's VFW Post #1492 placed the Union Flag of the United Kingdom* on the graves of Christian Wultzen and Thomas F. Baldwin in Moon Point in commemoration of their service to Great Britain.  This was covered in the May 28th edition of the Streator Times-Press newspaper.  Below is a scan of the picture from that article, the text may be read here

I consider this event particularly significant coming as it did just a few days before the 60th anniversary of the landing of allied British, Canadian, and American forces in Normandy, France.  My personal thanks to Ms. Cracraft, Vice Consul Politics Press & Public Affairs, British Consulate General, Chicago for providing the flags and to VFW Post 1492 for providing the service.
*Affectionately referred to as the Union Jack, properly that term only applies when it's flown from a ship's jackstaff (source).

2005 UPDATE:
I was surprised and pleased to find that the Union Jacks placed for Memorial Day, 2004 were still flying proudly on my visit to the cemetery this past Memorial Day weekend:
