In 1867, 18 year old Candy Cummings, a pitcher with the Brooklyn Excelsiors baseball team, tried out the pitch he had been perfecting in secret for years. He takes to the mound and gets ready for his pitch. He threw it with a snap of his wrist and saw that the ball makes an arch, and saw the batter fan through the pitch, and never even came close to touching the ball. This was when the curve was developed, and later taught and pasted on. Today, in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., there is a plaque that reads: Candy Cummings, inventor of curve ball.
