Music has always been a part of my life. As kids, my cousin and I used to sing around the piano while our grandma played. Later, Grandma taught me how to play and read music and still later I went to 'proper' music lessons. I was in the school choir.
Much, much later, I played bass and sang in a band that my husband was in. We eventually progressed to a 5-piece in which I was singing and not playing an instrument. After the stock market crash in the 80s, my husband and I played as a duo to get work in that field because no-one was wanting to pay the money for the bigger bands.
One highlight was that we were the support act for The Barron Knights when they toured in New Zealand in the early 90s. They are a group that started in the 1960s and is still around today. I think that three of the original musicians are still there - Pete, Butch and Duke. Their biggest fame came from doing parodies of other people's songs. I watched all 17 of their shows while on tour; they are very talented and funny guys.
These days we still are a duo but are not chasing gigs, just doing those that come along from word of mouth.
The kind of music we do is probably what is called 'middle-of-the-road'. We do songs ranging from real oldies, swing jazz standards, good old rock 'n' roll, country, rock, songs from the 60s and 70s (didn't much like a lot of what came out in the 80s) and some of the later ones that suit our format.
