For starters, use GNU/Linux as your OS, and/or as much Free Software as possible. If you must use Windows, at least be aware of the term Microsoft Tax.

We all know that feeling unfortunately, and even the pulpit thumpers are often too busy to take backups.  Here are some tools and CDs that can help you recover lost partitions, recover lost files, LiveCDs can be used to recover data on a PC that will no longer boot.   Also check out the Ubuntu remix CD and RTFM!!
