The X series, the second saga in the Mega Man storyline, takes place in 21xx, 100 years after the end of the original. Dr.Light is dead and his final creation, the android codenamed "X", has been released from his test chamber by archeaologists. From X's rebirth came the creation of a line of robots with A.I. far surpassing modern technology. But soon, because of an incident with a blood-thirsty red android, the new robots went "irregular(or Maverick)". Turning them evil. X and many others began a war against these Mavericks, and so the story of X begins......
The first "X" game was introduced in 1992 as a way to add onto the popularity of the MegaMan franchise. It also, in turn, allowed MegaMan co-creator Keiji infune, to introduce his only soley created character, the Irregular Hunter Zero.
This game introduced several innovations to the MegaMan system. Not only was it the first in the saga to have wall-climbing abilities, it also introduced an Armor system, different from those in previous MegaMan titles. Originally MegaMan would have to get a sequence of letters spelling out name in order to transform, X changed that. Now he only had to find pieces of the armor, which he could immediatly use.
