Founded as the Toledo, Ohio franchise in the
minor Western League in 1893, the Boston Red Sox after having
been placed in the Eastern Division of the American League
became the defending World Series Champions. Their autocracy
ranks second after the New York Yankees. With the players like
Babe Ruth who was not only the leading player of the Red Sox but
also the finest player in the history of baseball. In 1919 he
became the Yankees possession. The time he was traded it was not
assumed by anybody that he had rule the pro baseball. His contract
was a straight sale. The team s owner Harry Frazee also traded
other star players like Ban Johnson, Sad Sam Jones and Waite
Hoyt. These players were the core of the team in the early
decades of 90s. In the later half of the 1930s, the Red Sox
acquired outfielder Ted Williams. The club was then playing in
the Pacific Coast League. Due to his exceptionally good hitting
skills, the club steered into an era when the team became famous
as the "Ted Sox". Williams is considered as one of the greatest
hitters in the history of baseball who hit for both power and
average. Incidentally, he is the only last player to hit .400
for a full season, in 1941. Though he assisted his club to make
the World Series appearance but the St. Louis Cardinals
sidelined his club. In that series the shortstop would move to
the right side of the infield to make it harder for the
left-handed-hitting Williams to hit to that side of the field.
He garnered only five singles in 25 at-bats, for a .200 average.
Williams retired at the end of the 1960 season, famously hitting
a home run in his final at-bat. The 1961 season saw the debut of
Carl Yastrzemski ("Yaz"). He is best known for his hitting
skills particularly in the decade, which was lucrative for the
Red Sox in pitching. In 1967 the team received its famous
moniker impossible Dream , since it finished the season in
ninth place. Yaz led the team to the World Series and won the
American League Triple Crown and put on one of the greatest
displays of hitting. The season is also remembered as one of the
great championship races in the history of baseball as four
teams vied for the title until almost the last game. In 1975,
the Sox won the American League championship featuring Yaz,
rookie outfielders Jim Rice and Fred Lynn, veteran outfielder
Dwight Evans, catcher Carlton Fisk, and pitchers Luis Tiant and
the eccentric junkballer Bill Lee. In 1998, the Red Sox acquired
star pitcher Pedro Martinez and delivered stunning scores that
made the Red Sox an unprecedented team in the major league. In
1999, the Red Sox won Game 3 (9-3) behind the pitching of Ramon
Martinez, Pedro's brother, and Derek Lowe against the Cleveland
Indians. During the 2004 off-season, the Red Sox procured the
star pitcher Curt Schilling. They desired to own shortstop Alex
Rodriguez also, but the deal fell through, and A-Rod went to the
Yankees. Management shook up the team at the MLB trading
deadline on July 31 by trading shortstop Nomar Garciaparra in a
four-team deal. The Red Sox is the first team in baseball
history and the third in North American professional sports
history, after the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and the 1975 New
York Islanders of the NHL to assemble from a 3-0 loss to win a
best-of-7 series. The series also earned David Ortiz the MVP
honor. The Red Sox players were chosen the Sportsmen of the Year
by the Sports Illustrated magazine. He Sox s biggest rival in
the MLB are the New York Yankees, who after the Babe Ruth trade
in 1919 would go on to win 26 World Series championships
