Dress Code Policy

Members of the task force on discipline met to discuss the issue of dress code.

The members
present were:
  • 3 teachers
  • 1 student
  • 1 parent
  • 1 administrator.
  • Issues:
  • Students want the freedom to wear the clothes that they choose.
  • Teachers are offended by vulgarity.
  • PAC is split between vulgarity and freedom of expression.
  • Process:
All members of the task force had opinions on dress code issues. Students wanted as much freedom as possible and asked for a rationale behind the restrictions to their dress. Responses were heard from all other stakeholders. The response by the teachers and parents was immediate and spirited. Strong feelings were expressed as to what was acceptable dress for school. The principal and board representative voiced their understanding of dress code restrictions with much animated discussion resulting. The students wanted an explanation and the other task force members supplied them with the reasoning behind establishing a dress code. The feedback from all these stakeholders was assimilated and eventually an agreement on dress code regulation was reached.
    Result of the process:
  • There will be no drug or alcohol representation on clothes.Clothing must be appropriate style for a professional school. Students not meeting this criteria will be asked to change their clothes.
  • Teachers as professionals will decide what is appropriate dress and identify offenders.
  • Students wearing inappropriate clothing will be spoken to by the counsellor, and sent home to change.
  • VP deals with furthur infractions of the dress code.
  • Chronic problems will result in a suspension by the administration.

  • This policy change will be brought to SBDM council by a liaison, where the SBDM council will discuss the information presented, and come to a consensus about following the recommendations of the Task Force.
