Superintendent

The superintendent will be a member of the SBDM council for the first year it is in operation. Her role is more of a facilitator, information provider, and observer than a vocal member. After this initial start up, the superintendent will step back, out of the council.

The role of the superintendent includes:
  • replace top-down management process to the bottom-up decision making process
  • act as an advisor for the consensus process.
  • share information on board policies.
  • present ministry information to the council.
  • share research information and knowledge on the SBDM process.
  • communicate to the community what SBDM is, and why it is desirable
  • locate additional resources in the form of supplies, professioinal development and funding when applicable.
  • resource person for the school.
  • work with the administration of the school to monitor growth plans for the school.
  • evaluate the SBDM process, and effectiveness in the school.
  • facilitate the development of student and staff performance standards.
  • locate and provide resource materials, and extra funding when possible.

    School Administration

The school administration team, consisting of a principal and vice-principal will both be members of the SBDM team.

The role of the administration includes:

  • this change is sometimes expressed as reconceptualizing the principal's role from that of "boss" to that of "chief executive officer."
  • instead of enforcing policies made elsewhere, which inevitably sets him/her apart from the staff, the principal works collegially with staff, sharing authority with them.
  • the principal typically moves closer to the educational process, serving as an instructional manager.
  • the principal moves higher in the district chain of command, because of the increased authority and accountability that shifts to the school.

    Teachers

The teaching staff will place five members on the SBDM council. To ensure success of the Starcrest Mission Statement, the most crucial work within this framework, is done by the teachers and their peers in the classroom.

The role of the teachers includes:
  • act as leaders that take on responsibility for the implementation of the SBDM framework.
  • take an active role in decision-making that will have a direct impact on teaching and learning.
  • be an advocate for developing a school education plan that will ultimately promote healthy, productive classrooms.
  • engage in professional development activities that will promote and develop a school wide commitment for the continuous improvement of SBDM.
  • participate in collaborative decision-making with the committee.
  • take on the role of a learner that needs to understand the proper implementation of this new organization for the school.
  • work with staff as problem-solving teams that make well informed decisions for their school.

    Parents
The parents will provide two representatives to sit on the SBDM team. These parents will be elected every two years at an annual PAC meeting.

The role of the parents includes:

  • work collaboratively with the local school through the SBDM team and Task Forces
  • provide a representative to sit on each of the five task forces
  • receive information from the school, participate in discussions and give input on identified issues
  • liaison with the Parents' Advisory Council at their monthly meetings
  • build and strengthen parental involvement in the school
  • conduct surveys and/or gather data regarding satisfaction with the school as directed by the SBDM team

  • Students
The students will place two members on the SBDM council. One student will be a senior (grades 11 or 12) and one student will be a junior (grades 9 or 10). This is to allow for continuity within the council process and representation by the entire student body.

The role of the students includes:

  • being an advocate for student interests within the school
  • taking an active role in decision making
  • sharing views of the student body to all stakeholders
  • feel empowered because of their inclusion
  • communicating to the student body and bringing back feedback to the group
  • able to sit on task forces depending on interests
  • participating in group decisions with the committee

    Community Members
Two representatives will be invited to sit on the SBDM team. Interested community members need to forward their names to the the school principal by June of each school year.

The role of the community members includes:

  • become actively involved with the local school through the SBDM team
  • liaison between the school and community
  • develop a partnership between the school and local businesses, services and organizations
  • explore alternative/creative means for team building between the school and community
  • liaison with the Career Counsellors for Work Experience and Career Prep programs
  • provide an optional rep to sit on the task force team when requested by the SBDM team
