In Hong Kong, air pollution is very serious. We will introduce the reasons, effects and solutions to you.

Motor vehicles are the main source of air pollution. They emit lots of lead and carbon monoxide in the air.
The problem is particularly serious at the major road junctions and around the dense transport networks(e.g. Causeway Bay).

  • Power stations and gas plants

All of the Hong Kong’s electricity and most of the gas comes from burning coal. Power stations and gas plants are the main source of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide( which is waste gases). Because of the population growth, industrial development and rising in living standards, electricity consumption in Hong Kong today is almost 15000 times greater than 25 years ago. This has caused a great increase in air pollution.

  • Incinerators

Incinerators are used to burn some of the solid wastes of Hong Kong. They are found in Kwai Chung and Lautau Island. In the past, they were the main sources of air pollutants for urban areas. However, most of the incinerators have ceased operation in recent years. For example, the incinerator in Kennedy Town.

Sulphur dioxide is one of the pollutants in Hong Kong. It is because factories use low quality fuel, they emit lots of sulphur dioxide into the air and cause serious air pollution. Therefore, the pollution in industrial areas are more serious than the residential areas. The following figure shows the average sulphur dioxide concentration in the Kwun Tong.
