The 2001 Formula One U.S. Grand Prix at Indianopolis took place despite the emotional and logistical challenges from the September 11 World Trade Center attacks more than two weeks before.

The race was eventually won by the sabbatical-bound Mika Hakkinen, who executed McLaren's one-stop strategy flawlessly. Not only did he redeem himself from last year's retirement due to engine failure, he redeemed himself from the morning's penalty for speeding in the pit lane which demoted him from 2nd to 4th on the starting grid.
