Schumi eventually passed D.C. on the 7th lap and started to take a commanding lead, still driving on wet tires. On the next lap, Hakkinen came in to change to dry tires and started his chase of Schumacher, who eventually changed to dry tires on lap 17. By this time, I noticed that Hakkinen was starting to drive the same higher line on the banked Turn 13 as Schumacher and he was closing in on the Ferrari rapidly, taking almost one second off each lap...

Unfortunately for Mika, flames came out of his McLaren on lap 26, possibly from engine or exhaust problem, and he had to retire - the Speedway fans were denied what could have been a historic battle between the top two drivers of Formula One. This also jeopardized Hakkinen and McLaren's chances of winning the Driver's and Constructor's Championships.
