The race went on smoothly for a while (even when Bobby Rahal spun half-way off the track at The Corkscrew - he got pushed back on, and finished the race). Herta kept Zanardi at a safe distance, with mistake-free driving. Around the 70th lap, however, series of yellow flags slowed the pace of the race. This included a three car incident on a restart from yellow on lap 76 (I think it was caused by Patrick Carpentier's ill-fated inside pass attempt on the crest of Turn 1, a blind, fast left-hand turn).

Because the laps under yellow were counted as part of the 83 laps, the race was to end in a two-lap sprint race when the green flag fell for the final time. With Herta at first and Zanardi at second, a scenario similar to 1996 was about to take place - this was when Zanardi went off the course at The Corkscrew, to make a daring pass of Herta on the final lap to win the Grand Prix of Monterey (known as "The Pass"). People watched in excitement to see if Herta could prevent Zanardi from pulling off another trick...
