Even though Alex Zanardi had already wrapped up the driver's championship in the previous race at Vancouver, there were plenty of reasons to attend the CART/PPG race at Laguna Seca - this was Bobby Rahal's last season, and rumors had it that this might be Zanardi's last season as well, as he was thinking about returning to Formula One (the rumor was true). If anything, the race promised the attendees a chance to reflect on the season, the sport, and its people.

The race began with Bryan Herta at pole, young sensation Dario Franchitti second, and Jimmy Vasser third. My hero Michael Andretti made some contact and spun on the first lap at (ironically) Andretti Hairpin. As the race wore on, Zanardi climbed up to third, behind Herta and Vasser. Herta was definitely faster than Vasser, and Zanardi was held up by Vasser at third. Zanardi went up to second place when Vasser was brought in before Zanardi to pit, then Zanardi and Herta pitted right after.
