Despite repeated attempts by Zanardi to pass him, Bryan Herta held his ground and finished the race in first place, a first-ever win for Herta who shook off the "best driver never to win a race" jinx. (This was also a win for Bobby Rahal, the team owner) By qualifying first, and winning the race by fending off Zanardi, Herta may have had the breakthrough he needed to lead him to the next competitive level. (This is probably the last time he would race with Zanardi, so it was a good time for him to dispell the 1996 "The Pass" jinx as well.)

1999 should be an exciting season for CART/PPG, even if Zanardi has moved on to Formula One, and Rahal has retired. Will veterans like Al Unser Jr. and Michael Andretti reassert their dominance? Will Jimmy Vasser continue Chip Ganassi's dominance by going for a fourth consecutive constructor's championship? (He won in 1996, while teammate Zanardi won in 1997-1998) Or will this be the year of young drivers like Dario Franchitti or rookie Tony Kanaan? (Kanaan finished third, on the podium for this race) I'm looking forward to the Honda Grand Prix of Monterey at Laguna Seca in 1999!
