The war is a diagnosis of politicians' dullness,
which is mainly not cured.

Skulls, April, 2000.

The excavator's scoop raises old ammunitions , the sewage pipes are laid on bones of the unknown soldiers. We are speaking about the soldiers, without separating - Soviet or German.

M
any decades ago their relatives received a notice – on such and such date your son, husband or brother was missed in battle. Killed, his parts gathered together and in the end of ends thrown into a shell-hole and hardly powdered with earth.

The Lett, the Russian or the German... they are decomposing in the same way. And there they lie, the enemies, discarded in one grave, in a hurry, without any nameplate showing that PEOPLE  lie there .

Remains of the lost are found! And then the most interesting begins.

The first variant - the soldier continues to lie in that very place he was killed, but with one nuance – the bones are scattered around  in the radius of ten meters.

The second variant - the skull is taken away for some "diligent" student of the Medical Academy.

The third variant - the finder tries to inform some organizations, straightly connected with the searching and rebury of MIAs. What kind of organizations?

One of these organizations is ours. It is the Battlefield Search Party of Talis Eshmits "The Legend"  with close relations with identical organizations in Russia, Germany and Latvia.

We, "the diggers", co-operate with all organizations interested in reburying both German  and Soviet warriors.

We rummage in libraries and archives, search in curiosity shops for books and journals of that years, and like professionally trained tracking dogs investigate the history and pull out such things that are hardly of interest for somebody now.

Here is one example: according to one of the legends a German ace shot down Antoin de Saint-Exupery. In his turn this ace was shot down above  Latvia, but remains of the plane with the crew were not found. Now we are trying to find it.

Who are we and how are we called? "The earth-diggers" or just "the diggers", but our wives, they simply call us the fools ! Everyone who has the tongue and who is not indifferent to the style of our life, will find something to say.

Let them call us as they want, but not the marauders. We have an unwritten law: if we find a warrior, of any army, HIS PERSONAL THINGS AND AWARDS STAY WITH HIM . We are not "the black diggers", who for several dollars are ready to sell anything.

What do we do in our "free time"?  We work in good companies and occupy different posts and are just like usual men.

Why are we engaged in the reburying of  fallen soldiers of the past war?

Looking for rusty pieces of metal or checking different legends, we often learn of tragedies, occurred fifty five years ago

AND CANNOT GO BY.

The dipper we dig, the less is clear...

If you are on the former battle-field and are trying to understand  at least something, don't waste time trying... There is not any logic in a war.
