Municipal/Metropolitan Police Service

Many municipalities and metropolitan councils have their own police forces. Since 1998, they have been under the auspices of the SA Police Service Act, and they are now collectively known as the Municipal/Metropolitan Police Service. A series of decorations and medals, corresponding to those of the SA Police Service, was instituted for them in 2008.

  


MMPS Gold Cross for Bravery (MPBG) (2008-)
To be awarded for exceptional bravery in extremely damgerous circumstances, in the line of duty or in protecting or saving life or property.

Insignia: A gold cross displaying a wreathed gold star on a blue roundel (obverse), and the national coat of arms with the words "Fortes Fortuna Juvat" (reverse).


MMPS Silver Cross for Bravery (MPSB) (2008-)
To be awarded for bravery in dangerous circumstances, in the line of duty or in protecting or saving life or property.

Insignia: Same design as the MPBG, but in silver.


MMPS Gold Decoration for Outstanding Service (MPGS) (2008-)
Awarded to MMPS chiefs and deputy chiefs, for particularly meritorious or exemplary service, or outstanding resourcefulness, leadership, sense of duty, and example.

Insignia: A circular silver-gilt medal displaying a wreathed gold star on a blue roundel in the centre of a 5-pointed star (obverse), and the national coat of arms with the words "Virtute et Fide" (reverse).


MMPS Silver Decoration for Outstanding Service (MPSS) (2008-)
Awarded to MMPS personnel up to the rank of director, for meritorious or exemplary service, or outstanding resourcefulness, leadership, sense of duty, and example.

Insignia: Same design as the MPGS, but in silver.


MMPS Commendation Medal (2008-)
For commendable service of a meritorious nature, or outstanding resourcefulness and sense of duty.

Insignia: A circular nickel medal displaying a wreathed gold star on a blue roundel on a 16-pointed star (obverse).


MMPS Inauguration Medal (2008)
Awarded to local authority traffic officers, security officers and other law enforcement officials who qualified for appointment to the MMPS in 1999.

Insignia: A 9-pointed nickel star displaying a wreathed gold star on a blue roundel (obverse).


MMPS Forty Year Loyal Service Medal (2008-)
For 40 years irreproachable service and exemplary conduct.

Insignia: A circular gold medal displaying a wreathed star on a blue background (obverse).


MMPS Thirty Year Loyal Service Medal (2008-)
For 30 years irreproachable service and exemplary conduct.

Insignia: A circular silver-gilt medal displaying a wreathed star (obverse).


MMPS Twenty Year Loyal Service Medal (2008-)
For 20 years irreproachable service and exemplary conduct.

Insignia: Same design as the 30-year medal, but in bronze.


MMPS Ten Year Loyal Service Medal (2008-)
For 10 years irreproachable service and exemplary conduct.

Insignia: Same design as the 30-year medal, but in bronze.


Municipal/Metropolitan Police Service Canine and Equine Cross for Bravery
To be awarded to municipal/metropolitan police dogs and horses for bravery in dangerous circumstances in the line of duty or in protecting or saving life or property.

Insignia: A silver-gilt cross paty charged with a purple cross in the centre of which is a German Shepherd dog head in a horseshoe (obverse), and with the national coat of arms and "Fortes Fortuna Juvat" (reverse).
