Intelligence Services

The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the South African Secret Service (SASS), both founded in January 1995, and the South African National Academy of Intelligence (SANAI), opened in 2003, are collectively referred to as the "Intelligence Services".

A series of decorations and medals for valour, outstanding leadership, and long service, was instituted for them in November 2005.

  


Intelligence Services Medal for Valour (MV) (2005- )
To be awarded for valorous conduct in the face of great danger, while on service or on a perilous mission in the line of duty.

Insignia: A circular gold medal displaying the Intelligence Services' "all-seeing eye" emblem in the centre of a 12-pointed faceted star (obverse), and the national coat of arms (reverse).


Intelligence Services Outstanding Leadership Medal (OLM) (2005- )
Awarded to senior managers, for outstanding leadership which inspires personnel, improves the performance of their divisions, and causes national recognition and appreciation of his/her contribution.

Insignia: A circular gold medal depicting the Intelligence Services emblem between four arrows pointing outwards (obverse), and the national coat of arms (reverse).


Intelligence Services Distinguished Service Medal: Gold (DSG) (2005- )
For outstanding service which has an exceptional impact on the intelligence community.

Insignia: A circular gold medal displaying the Intelligence Services emblem between two elephant tusks (obverse), and the national coat of arms (reverse).


Intelligence Services Distinguished Service Medal: Silver (DSS) (2005- )
For remarkable and meritorious service which has a praiseworthy impact on the relevant intelligence structure.

Insignia: Same design as the DSG, but in silver.


Intelligence Services Distinguished Service Medal: Bronze (DSB) (2005- )
For noteworthy and special service which has a commendable impact on a work unit.

Insignia: Same design as the DSG, but in red copper.

Intelligence Services Loyal Service Medal (2005- )
For long service and exemplary conduct. The medal is awarded cumulatively in three classes: Bronze after 10 years, Silver after 20 years, and Gold after 30 years.

Insignia: A circular medal displaying the Intelligence Services emblem (obverse), and the national coat of arms (reverse).
