Justinian's Wars

A 6th century A.D. DBA campaign set during the period of the Byzantine reconquest of the West

Turn by Turn Reports

Autumn 534, Anno Domini

"...Two great fleets sailed the Mediterranean towards North Africa. One, outfitted in Constantinople, was packed with a Byzantine assault force on Carthage. The emperor deemed it time to take the war to the Vandal heartland, once again. The native Berbers chose the moment to revolt in Vandal-ruled Libya, as well. And the emperor's allies, the Gepids, launched an Autumn attack on the Vandal enclave of Moesia which split their kingdom.

The other fleet a-sail was more motley looking and headed towards the empire's breadbasket of Egyptus. The Visigoth warlord Vigdonic led this bold thrust, although Vandal connivance was assumed. Meanwhile, the Vandals themselves outfitted their own great fleet to carry their mightiest army across the Adriatic to attack the Gepid-ruled hills of Dalmatia..."

Byzantines Besiege Carthage

Surprise and alarm spread through the streets of Carthage when word arrived of the Byzantine fleet's landing. The governor Homeric, ruling in the king's absence, gathered the garrison and rode to contest the enemy advance. Homeric's men were driven back by a disciplined, combined-arms attack led by Byzantine General Maximus. The garrison retreated behind the walls as Maximus' men laid siege to the Vandal capital.

Rebel Rising Undisciplined

The Vandal chief Gaelasic learned of the Berber tribes revolt by the sound of javelins thudding against his camp walls. He beat off the first undisciplined assault and collected his outposts scattered through the Libyan desert. Scouring the countryside for the rebels, he found them and scattered their unruly masses. Expeditions were sent off to punish the tribes responsible as the desert remained in Vandal hands.

Gepid Attack Routed

The Gepid Thorisin knew his kingdom could not survive long split into fragments. He collected his army and rode to Vandal-held Moesia, seeking to rejoin the halves. He was met by the Vandal warlord Genseric. Tactics were flung aside as the two armies formed lines and charged. The Vandal charge proved weightier and splintered Thorisin's force, driving them headlong from the field in rout.

Breadbasket Bagged

Although his fleet was neither as uniform or impressive as the Byzantine one, it was successful in landing the Spanish Visigoth warlord Vigdonic amidst the delta of the Nile River. The weak Byzantine garrison was padded out with emergency levies and citizenry, and met the invaders along the Nile's banks. The exarch Scipio fought a skillful, careful fight, nearly overpowering Vigdonic's men. However, the size and skill of the Visigothic army was too great and the emperor's breadbasket of Egyptus was seized by the invaders.

Vandal Veteran Rides Again

It had been more than a year since the Vandal's greatest army and warlord had rode to war. However, their holdings in Central Europe were hard pressed, and a great fleet was outfitted to take Huneric's men to their aid. The hoary veteran landed on the Dalmatian coast and quickly drove the Gepids from the hills. The enemy's kingdom was further fragmented, while the Vandal assault on Europe gained momentum, despite their capital's siege in North Africa.
