Roman Crucifix Camp

Roman "Crucifix" Camp

Ah, I wish I had the digital camera I have now when I took this picture. As you can see, it's a bit blurry, and this was definitely a stunning camp, I felt -- right up there with the Burnt at the Stake camp. A friend of mine from West Virginia, Nick Gillispie, wanted a camp for his Roman DBA army. My thoughts immediately turned to palisades and ditch and embankments, but no. Nick had a crucifixtion in mind. I told him I would look into seeing if it was possible.

At Siege of Augusta 2004, my buddy Jason Mirosavich found the unfortunate Gaul I've nailed to the cross. He is supposed to be a casualty figure, I believe, but we both agreed he'd be perfect. I planned this to be a Spartacus, kind of slave nailed to crosses along the road, theme. Thus, the roadside lined with columns. The Roman legionary is a Pass of the North Gaul or Spaniard, actually, and his servants are Feudal Castings Oriental peasants. Just shows what a bit of paint can do to convert a figure without touching an X-acto knife!

I had to make a nod to "THE" crucifixtion with the servant dipping the sponge in a container of red wine. This might be a tad morbid for some folks, but all in all, I think this camp is an eye-popper!
