The Labrador Club of New Zealand

A History of the Club's Championship Show

This is really a personal mission as I felt that the winning dogs of the past fade so easily into obscurity and I have a passion for our Club and it's history. The good dogs of the past shape the dogs of the future and so in celebration of our upcoming 50th Championship Show in 2009  I have attempted to record as accurately as possible the winning dogs of the Club Championship Show since the inaugural Show in 1968. I have no doubt there will be some errors or gaps in the information I have gleaned - especially in the early days and would appreciate any feedback regarding people and dogs involved.  This is a site in constant construction - please be patient. Most of the photos have been scanned from the Club Championship Show album. It is fair to say that in many cases due to age or conditions at the time the pictures do not do the dogs justice.

The
Club Committee works so hard to make a success of each Championship Show. I have been there and done it - it really does take a lot of hard work and I applaud all those who have contributed over the years. They too should not be forgotten - so in honour of their efforts I have where possible recorded their names with each Show. On behalf of the Club a big thank you to all of you. The current committee I am sure will try very hard as they did with the 40th Ruby Show to encourage as many past committee & club members to attend on the day.

Comments about individual dogs are mine alone and do not reflect the views of the Club or any other person in The Labrador Club of NZ.

Photos of winners pre 1977 would be appreciated if anyone has them.

I hope you enjoy looking back in time as I do and would remind you that at every Championship Show the Club's photograph album is always on display for your perusal. This contains photographs of all Best of Class winners from 1977. The Club owes a debt of gratitiude in particular to Susan Poulter and Georgina Devlin who have cared for and kept the album up to date over the years.

Thanks - enjoy.    Mike Gething

Only lab to win three times

Champion Missenden Meringue - owned & bred by Life Member Sally Oscar.

Meringue is truly a 'star'. She is the only Labrador to have won our Championship Show three times - in 1977, 1979 & 1981. She is also the dam of winning BIS Ch Missenden Medway Man who won in 1983 and great grand dam of Gr Ch Southerly Shadow who won in both 1990 and 1996.

Inaugural meeting of the Labrador Club held at the SPCA rooms , 70 New North Road Auckland on 3rd April 1965.
Moved by Mr Eddie Croad, seconded by Mrs Margaret Martin that on this 3rd day of April 1965 a Labrador Club should be formed.

And so our club started .....................................
