D. What is a Christian Witch? | |
LESSON II - D |
Note: ~~>While reading this lesson, please keep in mind that are many opinions associated with this question, and what I am offering is a variety of answers that will be more thought provoking than anything else. I have tried very hard to keep my personal opinions in check so that you can reach your own conclusions. In the long run, the final decision is ultimately left up to you. Please also note that I, in no way, mean to disrespect the Christian beliefs in this writing. I am simply using commonly acknowledged facts as a guideline to assist in the study process. I would also like to point out that I am still studying religious history, and do not, in any way, claim to be an authority on the matter. I have purposely exclude religious historical material from this lesson, feeling that it may enhance biased conclusions if included. |
What is A Christian Witch? | More appropriately, is it possible to be a Christian Witch? This is a question that I hear often and feel is worthy of discussion. Many individuals who find their way on the Pagan path often come from Christian backgrounds. Finding themselves being drawn to the Pagan ways, yet not quite ready to discard the ways they grew up with, they often feel pulled in different directions. This tends to make their journey a bit bumpy in the beginning, giving them much to think about. Some feel hesitant, not wanting to be disloyal to everything they've ever been taught. Others find it difficult to set aside the labels that the majority of society continues to wave under our noses. Either way, many, at one point or another, question what is right or wrong, or what is true or untrue. Depending on who you speak with, some will say that it is not possible to be a Christian Witch. Then there are those who call themselves a Christian and a Witch in the same breath, without any hesitation, labeling themselves 'Christo-Pagan'. Just based on this fact alone, I would have to say that being a Christian Witch is possible if there are those that are who are calling themselves such. But how plausible is this, really? Let's take a look at some of the 'in's and out's' of such a label. Let's first take a look at some of the differences between Paganism/Witchcraft and Christianity:
I'm sure that there are more differences, but I can not think of anymore at the moment, so we'll move on to the similarities between Witchcraft and Christianity.
Again, I'm sure there are additional similarities, and given time, they will become apparent to you. For now you have an equal amount of differences to similarities. Still the question remains...judging from these difference and similarities, is it possible to be a Christian Witch? Let me just say that my initial reaction to this question was of complete astonishment. I could not fathom how this could be possible. Having grown up a Catholic, I had become angry and disillusioned about the Catholic Church when I began learning about Witchcraft, and particulary about the Burning Times. Knowing that Chrisitianity was a driving force in the deaths of over 9 million people, I thought to myself 'why would anyone want to associate the two together?' As I calmed down, and continued with my studies, I eventually realized that it was a personal decision, as is all religion, and who was I to judge anothers beliefs. It was also about this time that one of my mentors, White, said to me "Just because you are now following a Pagan path, doesn't mean that you have to set aside everything you've ever learned." And how right she was. Once I realized that it I didn't need to forsake absolutely everything to follow my new spiritual path, it was as if a door opened up to me, and my heart and mind were greatly eased. I was then able to move forward in my journey. But what about others? What about those who can not seem to make a clear decision on this matter? To you I say 'you are who you are'. Being an eclectic Pagan, Wiccan, or Witch is a popular choice these days, and we tend to pride ourselves on being open to all religious paths. Why should accepting some of the ways of Christianity be any different. But then again, the final decision rests with you. The only advice I can truely give, is this: No matter what path you take, no matter how many beliefs you adopt from elsewhere, always be true to yourself. |
