Miaka is the main character in the story. Miaka was just like any other Japanese school-girl, studying hard for her entrance exams so she could pass them and get into a top-ranked high school with her best friend Yui . She also has a love for food. (*sweatdrops*) But one day, everything changed when she was transported into a magical, ancient Chinese novel called "the Universe of Four Gods." She became Suzaku No Miko (which means Priestess of Suzaku), a legendary girl that comes from another world to call upon the beast god Suzaku to bring peace and happiness. Miaka fell deeply in love with one of the men in the book named Tamahome. He, in return, fell in love with her and is not afraid to admit it, despite rival Emperor Hotohori's sword threats.(lol) She goes through a lot in this story including love, hate, death, among other things. She ends up having to fight against her own best friend because Yui depended on Miaka to save her, but Nakago told Yui that Miaka turned against her and only wanted to be with Tamahome.
